In a strict sense Norway is not a Baltic country, yet as part of the Scandinavian region it has a strong historical link to the Baltic region.

In 2002 Tor Eystein Øverås spent eight months travelling around the Baltic Sea and, in 2005, published a book based on his experiences. The book is part travelogue, part memoir, part literary essay and part cultural history. It is a literary journey that envisions the Baltic region as a unit connected by a sea that transcends national borders.

Artistic reference points include Knut Hamsun, P. O. Enquist, Eyvind Johnson, Dostoyevsky, Günter Grass, Edvard Munch, Thomas Mann, Bo Widerberg and Andrei Tarkovsky.
