Åsmund Forfang was born in 1952 in Orkdal in Trøndelag county, in Norway. He made his debut with a collection of short stories, Bilen med det store hjertet (The Car with the Big Heart), at just 20 years old. The short stories in this volume were science fiction, a genre unusual in Norway at the time, and published by Gyldendal in the publishing house's legendary series of quality paperbacks, called Lanterne. Since his debut Forfang has published several collections of short stories and novels. He has also written several books about industrial history in Trøndelag county. He has published one book on atheism and his latest work is a treatise on the seminal period for freedom of the press in Norway (1814–1842).

Forfang is also a journalist, and is very active on the literary scene in Norway as a translator, proof reader and consultant. He has held several positions in literary organizations in Norway. He translates mainly from English. His translations include novels and short stories by Peter Carey, Henry Lawson and Uzma Aslam Khan. Forfang’s literary language is nynorsk – New Norwegian. He lives in Orkdal.
